Painting in Snow

The Paintings

I paint primarily nature and landscapes, both outdoors and in the studio. I combine both skills of indoor and outdoor painting into large compositions. The oil paint is often thick as frosting sculpted and layered with my brushes into relief shapes. I paint outdoors in all seasons, transcribing in paint my developing relationship with the subject and place. While painting I'm aware of color and its dependence on light to exist, and how light changes in time, altering the color across physical surfaces. The work explores the connection of human senses to the surrounding environment. If an entire culture is but a passing episode in the history of the earth, what is a tree or an individual's life?

My major influences in paint are Monet, Van Gogh and early Corot (the Rome paintings) for their paint application, color use, focus, emotion and beauty. Rembrandt inspires me with his ability to paint several layers of the human experience.

The drawings are visual letters composed in the studio from my time spent in nature. They explore light and the relationships of surfaces, textures and bodies in space.
