About the Artist
I connect to my subjects in oil paint, searching for the core within the imagery that will hopefully communicate to the viewer a clear experience visually. I relish the outside work to be part of what is larger and can't be contained within one human being, but must be shared by all life on the planet. In the studio I use painting techniques and tricks of spatial illusion, to enhance the outdoor painting's space, color and light. Studio work is first sketched ideas, planned into physical reality with still life set ups, a light source to enhance space, placement and value study drawings. The painting is planned by mixing local colors, shadow colors and neutralized. Then I mix the light area colors. A preliminary wash in oil and Gamsol is laid in, then in paint & linseed oil. Once completed to satisfaction, an enlarged painting may be planned. When dry, a varnish is applied. I'm now in the planning stage of combining a studio still life with an outdoor window view. |
